Legislation to allow private employers to offer their employees the choice of regular paid time off in lieu of overtime pay passed the House on May 8, by a vote of 223 to 204. Such compensatory time would be provided at a rate of 1.5 hours per hour of overtime work. Under current law, public employees already have the option of choosing between time off and time and a half pay for overtime hours worked.
