According to a letter sent by the White House to top-ranking members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, U.S. intelligence has determined “with varying degrees of confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically the chemical agent sarin.” The letter was in response to a request from Senators John McCain (AZ-R), Carl Levin (MI-D), and several other lawmakers for the administration’s assessment of chemical weapons use during Syria’s two-year civil war.
