Founded in 1871, the NRA is a nonprofit organization that promotes the right of citizens to bear arms, as well as police training, firearm safety, marksmanship, hunting, and self-defense. Wayne LaPierre has served in his current position since 1991. He joined the organization in 1978 as a state liaison in the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), and became Executive Director of the NRA-ILA in 1986.
