Supap Kirtsaeng came to the United States from Thailand in 1997 to enroll as an undergraduate at Cornell University. Prior to returning to Thailand, he entered a Ph.D. program at the University of Southern California. Throughout his college career, he generated income by having relatives in Thailand buy English language textbooks and send them to him in the United States; he resold them on eBay under the name “Bluechristine99.” He made money on the transactions because textbook publishers offered their titles at greatly lower prices abroad than they did in the United States.
