The United States was a party to this case in the lower courts, defending the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) against a constitutional challenge. After appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, however, the United States switched sides and is now arguing that Section 3 of the Act be struck down. It is still considered a petitioner in this case for Court purposes, although it is arguing that the Court uphold the lower court decision. Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., was nominated to be solicitor general by President Obama on January 26, 2011, and was sworn in on June 9, 2011….
