The 2008 presidential election is notable for a number of
reasons. It is the first time in U.S. history that a major party has
chosen an African American (Illinois Senator Barack Obama) as its
nominee, and the first time that the Republican Party has named a woman
(Alaska Governor Sarah Palin) to run as Vice President.

It is
also the first time that two sitting senators will run against each
other in a presidential race. And not since 1952 has there been a
general election in which neither the incumbent President nor the
incumbent Vice President is a candidate.
