The United States is the only country in North America that currently allows the death penalty. On February 5, 2003, Mexico brought suit against the United States, alleging that 54 (later reduced to 52) Mexican nationals were on death row in violation of international law because they were denied timely access to Mexican consular officials following their arrest.
