The nation of Pakistan was founded on August 14, 1947, following British withdrawal from the Asian Subcontinent. General Pervez Musharraf assumed power in a coup on October 12, 1999. He assumed the presidency on June 20, 2001. Pakistan has an elected seat on the UN Security Council that expires on December 31, 2004.
