Italy joined the United Nations on December 14, 1955. It is an elected member of the UN Security Council whose term expires on December 31, 2008. Aldo Mantovani is Italy’s deputy permanent representative to the UN. The following is excerpted from Ambassador Mantovani’s statement during the UN Security Council debate on August 18, 2008.
