Chronology of Events Over the Last Century
1911-12 — Italy conquers Libya, as the Ottoman Empire renounces its claim over the country. 1920s — Libyan resistance to Italian rule begins under the leadership of the Sanusi dynasty and Umar al-Mukhtar. 1943 — With the fall of the Axis powers in World War II, the Allies oust the Italians from Libya, which is then divided between the French, who control Fezzan, and the British, who control Cyrenaica and Tripolitania. 1949 — The United Nations grants independence for a united Libya. 1950 — A national assembly convenes in Tripoli.
