The unfolding nuclear emergency at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan, along with long-term nuclear safety issues, were front and center at the April 4-14 Fifth Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety in Geneva. Delegations from 61 of the 72 “contracting parties” countries attended. The aim of the Convention, originally adopted in 1994, is to legally commit participating states operating land-based nuclear power plans to maintain a high level of safety by setting international benchmarks.
