Haiti’s New Leadership
On April 4, 2011, Haiti elected Michel Joseph Martelly, a former musical celebrity and businessman also known as “Sweet Mickey, as its new president. The election was seen as a potential turning point in the country’s reconstruction efforts following the catastrophic earthquake of January 2010. Having recently marked his first 100 days in office, however, Martelly is still struggling to form a government, let alone resettle the thousands of earthquake victims still living in tent cities and clean up the vast piles of remaining rubble.
