Chronology of Events From Mali's Independence to the Present

1960 ― Mali becomes independent with Modibo Keita as president. It becomes a one-party, socialist state and withdraws from the franc zone of sub-Saharan countries. 1968 ― Keita is ousted in coup led by Lieutenant Moussa Traoré, who becomes the head of state. 1974 ― Malians approve a new constitution. 1977 ― Protests erupt following Keita’s death in prison. 1979 ― Mali’s new constitution provides for elections.
