Senator Coats was appointed to the U.S. Senate in December 1988 to fill the vacancy caused by the election of Senator Dan Quayle as Vice President. He was elected in a 1990 special election, and served until 1999. He was again elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. He previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1989 and as U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from 2001 to 2005. He sits on the following committees: Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Select Committee on Intelligence; and the Joint Economic Committee, where he is the Ranking Minority Member.
