Aereo, Inc. is a technology company that devised a system whereby users could record over-the-air television broadcasts by “renting” small antennae connected to hard drives at a remote location and then stream the broadcasts via the Internet to a viewing device at a time of their choosing. A group of broadcasting and media companies alleged that Aereo’s service was an unauthorized, illegal rebroadcast of their copyright-protected content and filed suit against Aereo in Federal court.
