The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 establishes a system that increases health care coverage for Americans by requiring that they buy insurance and by providing subsidies or other government programs for those who cannot afford it. The law also prohibits insurers from discriminating against individuals based on pre-existing medical conditions and establishes baseline standards of coverage. Those who do not receive insurance through their employer or via a government program like Medicare or Medicaid can shop for individual policies on a health insurance marketplace, or exchange.
