In 2010, Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act with bipartisan support. The law was designed to address America’s childhood obesity epidemic by helping schools around the country provide balanced meals that meet basic health standards based on recommendations form the National Institute of Medicine. The Act, which expires on September 30, phases in reductions in calories, sugar, salt, and fat in foods served in Federal school lunch and breakfast programs and campus vending machines.
