Since 1978, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has used a five-star rating system to determine how well vehicles protect occupants in front, side, and rollover crashes. That system has come under criticism in recent years following a study revealing that nearly all vehicles were awarded four or five stars, even some that were later recalled for safety defects.
