The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 requires employer-provided insurance to meet a base level of coverage for preventive services. In implementing the law, the Department of Health and Human Services interpreted this requirement to include some kinds of contraception and sterilization procedures for women offered at no cost to the insured.
