In October 2013, a group of Pennsylvania organizations affiliated with the Catholic Church and church leaders — including Bishop David A. Zubik of the Pittsburgh Diocese — filed suit against the U.S. Government, alleging that they were being unlawfully compelled to provide contraceptive coverage for their employees through their employer-sponsored insurance plans. They argued that an accommodation in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that allowed them to opt out of the Act’s free-contraception insurer mandate still made them complicit in providing such services and violated their religious beliefs in a way that ran afoul of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act….
