The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires that insurance providers meet a variety of preventive-care coverage requirements, including free contraception for female enrollees. In implementing the Act, the Department of Health and Human Services offered exemptions for religious groups that may have theological objections to having their insurance providers offer such services. In addition, the Government provided an accommodation for organizations affiliated with religious groups, such as hospitals, charities, and schools, whereby they could opt-out from the mandate.
