On February 7, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY-D) introduced legislation (S. 373) to allow transgender people to serve in the military. She was joined by cospon­sors Senators Jack Reed (RI-D), Ranking Minority Mem­ber of the Armed Services Committee, and Susan Collins (ME-R). Representative Jackie Speier (CA-D), Chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel, has introduced a similar measure (H.R. 1032). Specifically, the legislation would prohibit the Defense Department from denying people the ability to enlist or continue to serve in the military solely on the basis of their gender identity.
