In August 2016, the good-government organization Common Cause joined the North Carolina Democratic Party and a group of voters across the State to challenge the constitutionality of the State’s congressional district map. The group alleged that the North Carolina Legislature violated the First Amendment, the Elections Clause, and the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution by creating congressional districts that locked in a grossly disproportionate partisan advantage for Republicans, effectively rendering the votes of many Democrats in the State meaningless.
