Just over a decade ago, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the first of two decisions that would reshape the legal debate over gun control in the nation.
In District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and then in McDonald v. Chicago (2010), a slim majority of justices ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to keep and bear arms for self defense.
Since then, lower courts have been left to interpret these rulings and apply them to a variety of state and local gun control laws on the books across the nation. This term, the court is considering the legality of a New York City statute …
