Jose Santos Sanchez, Sonia Gonzalez and their three children entered the United States from El Salvador in the late 1990s. They did so without proper documentation and without having been inspected or approved by U.S. immigration agents. In 2001, the United States granted temporary protected status (TPS) to individuals from El Salvador because of unstable conditions in that nation. Sanchez and Gonzalez applied for and received TPS approval from the U.S. government, which allowed them to remain and legally work in the U.S., which both did. …
