Zayn al-Abidin Muhammad Husayn, also known as Abu Zubaydah, was captured by U.S. forces in Pakistan on March 28, 2002. Believing Zubaydah to be a high-level member of Al-Qaida, the Americans transported him to a series of detention facilities, where he was subjected to what the U.S. termed “enhanced interrogation techniques,” including waterboarding, sleep deprivation and forced stress positions — practices that subsequently have been deemed torture.
