What Congress Is Doing on Social Security Reform
What is the Social Security Fairness Act?
H.R. 82, or the Social Security Fairness Act, cuts the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), enacted in 1983, and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), enacted in 1977. These programs were enacted to reduce the financial burden on the Social Security program, but they received considerable criticism in the decades since. A bipartisan effort sought to repeal these programs, which mainly affected public servants such as retired teachers and firefighters.
