Efforts in Congress to promote U.S. interests in the Arctic
Members of the 119th Congress have introduced multiple bills to address an array of concerns in the Arctic, including military and economic opportunities and wildlife preservation. Specifically, two bills pave the way to implement a plan mentioned by President Donald Trump to annex Greenland, a territory that is a part of Denmark. In addition to interests in expanding the U.S.’s presence in the Arctic, another bill in the 119th Congress would significantly alter a current oil and gas program that permits drilling in protected wilderness in Alaska.
