CCSSO is a nationwide, nonpartisan, nonprofit organizationcomposed of public officials who lead the departments responsiblefor elementary and secondary education in the States, the U.S.extra-State jurisdictions, the District of Columbia, and the Departmentof Defense Education Activity. In representing chief educationadministrators, CCSSO works on behalf of the State agencies thathave primary authority for education in each State. Gordon M.Ambach has been the CCSSO’s national spokesperson in Washingtonsince 1987. From 1967 to 1987, he was Executive Deputy Commissionerand then Commissioner of Education and President of the Universityof the State of New York.
