Senator Lautenberg was first elected to the Senate in 1982. He served three consecutive terms and then, after two years off, returned to the Senate in 1996. He was cofounder, chairman, and CEO of Automatic Data Processing from 1952 to 1982, and a New York and New Jersey Port Authority Commissioner from 1978 to 1982.
