The first United Nations peacekeeping force was deployed in 1948, when the Security Counsel decided to establish a field operation consisting of 36 unarmed military observers to maintain a fragile Arab-Israeli truce. More than half a century later, hundreds of thousands of individuals have served in 59 UN peacekeeping operations. As of May 2004, there were 55,457 military personnel and civilian police from 97 countries participating in 16 peacekeeping operations in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.Peacekeeping is based on the concept that an impartial presence by the United Nations can ease tensions and facilitate negotiated solutions…
