Terms Used in Fisheries Management

Anadromous — Fish that migrate as juveniles from freshwater to saltwater and then return as adults to spawn in freshwater; most Pacific salmon are anadromous. Aquaculture — The farming of aquatic organisms, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants, with some sort of intervention in the rearing process to enhance production, such as regular stocking, feeding, and protection from predators. Bycatch — Fish other than the primary target species that are caught incidental to the harvest of the primary species. Bycatch may be retained or discarded.
