Representative Pelosi, of the Eighth District of California, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987. She was the Northern Chair of the California Democratic Party from 1977 to 1981 and State Chair from 1981 to 1983. From 1985 to 1987, she was Finance Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. In January 2007, she became the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives.
