Representative Schakowsky, of the Ninth District of Illinois, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998. She founded National Consumers Unite in 1969, and was Program Director of Illinois Public Action from 1976 to 1985 and Executive Director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens from 1985 to 1990.
