Summary of Major Programs

Among the many programs the Federal Government adminsisters to assist low-income individuals — in the form of grants, benefits, and financial aid — are the following: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 replaced the welfare programs known as Aid to Families with Dependent Children, the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training program, and the Emergency Assistance program.
