Recent Action in Congress

Congress last reauthorized Federal child nutrition programs and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, better known as WIC, in 2004. The programs were due for reauthorization in 2009, but because of cost concerns, Congress delayed passed a one-year extension of the programs, through September 2010, instead. Senate Action On May 5, 2010, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry reported S. 3307, the Healthy, Hungry-Free Kids Act. Among other provisions, the bill, sponsored by Committee Chair Blanche Lincoln (AR-D), would reauthorize a number of child nutrition programs, including school lunches and breakfasts. It would also…
