Recent Developments in Congress
So far, lawmakers in Congress have passed four short-term spending bills, known as continuing resolutions, to provide funding for government programs for the current fiscal year, now more than five months old. They are now poised to pass a fifth. On March 11, the House Republicans unveiled a new stopgap measure to keep the the government running at last year’s spending level until April 8. The proposal, which would slash about $6 billion from the budget, would cut or terminate 25 Federal programs, including $2.6 billion in earmarks that were approved last year.
