Senator Conrad was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986. He served as Assistant North Dakota Tax Commissioner from 1974 to 1980, as Director of Management Planning and Personnel for the North Dakota Tax Department in 1980, and as North Dakota Tax Commissioner from 1981 to 1986. He chairs the Budget Committee and is a member of the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, the Finance Committee, the Indian Affairs Committee, and the Joint Committee on Taxation.
