Our society’s increasing reliance on electronic communications — including cell phones, pagers, emails, and faxes — has come with a price. The privacy of these new technologies is not always certain, presenting the danger that personal information can be obtained by outside parties. For instance, commercially made radio scanners can be modified relatively easily to receive cellular telephone transmissions within the immediate area. Attach a tape recorder, and the scanner becomes a homemade wiretapping device.
