Lewis F. Powell died in his sleep from pneumonia at 4:30 a.m. in his Richmond, Virginia, home on August 25 at the age of 90. He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Richard Nixon on October 21, 1971, and confirmed by the Senate on December 7, 1971. He served until June 26, 1987. Powell joined the firm of Hunton, Williams, Anderson, Gay & Moore in 1935, where he practiced law until his appointment to the Court.
