Sumners has run a nonprofit organization, City of Peace, for the past 6 months. Prior to that, she had a private practice specializing in civil rights. She has worked for both the American Civil Liberties Union and the Southern Poverty Law Center. She is a 1991 graduate of the University of Virginia Law School.
