Following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the United States invaded Afghanistan in an effort to topple the Taliban regime and eradicate the Al Qaeda terrorists it sheltered. In early 2002, as military operations in that country progressed, the United States and its allies began capturing individuals suspected of ties to enemy forces.The U.S. Government believed that if these detained enemy combatants were released, they would continue to plot against U.S. interests.
