They and 11 other Michigan wine consumers or journalists joined a small Californian winery, Domaine Alfred, in challenging the constitutionality of a Michigan law that prevents out-of-State wineries from shipping directly to Michigan residents. By requiring out-of-State wineries to ship to Michigan wholesalers, they argued, small wineries such as Domaine Alfred were effectively prevented from offering their products within the State.
