For25 years, the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) maintained an integratedschool system under a 1975 Federal court decree. After release from that decreefour years ago, the JCPS elected to continue its integrated schools through amanaged choice plan that includes broad racial guidelines. This case arisesbecause some students and their parents say that the board’s student assignmentplan violates their rights under the Equal Protection Clause of the U. S.Constitution.
