Glen D. Nager, Counsel of Record Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has operateda tire manufacturing plant in Gadsden, Alabama, since 1929. From 1979 to 1989,it employed Lilly M. Ledbetter, first as a production supervisor and then as anarea manager. Since 1982, the company has had a merit-based compensationsystem, whereby an employee’s supervisor is responsible for evaluating his orher employees and distributing raises. When Ledbetter retired in 1989, shelearned that her annual salary was $15,000 less than a male employee in asimilar position.
