Impact of Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Inc.
In June 2007, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Inc. This case involved questions about the timeliness of claims filed under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. In a 5-to-4 decision, the Court rejected the plaintiff’s argument that each paycheck she received reflected a lower salary due to past discrimination and therefore constituted a new violation of the statute.
