He is the only doctor in the State to perform abortions on women over 16 weeks pregnant. For women over 15 weeks pregnant, Dr. Carhart uses the dilation and extraction technique, which the State of Nebraska prohibited in its 1997 statute. On June 12, 1997, Dr. Carhart filed suit against the State of Nebraska, contending that its abortion law was unconstitutional.
