The rising cost of prescription drugs has become a hot-button political issue over the last decade, as many Americans particularly the elderly and uninsured experienced financial hardship due to the high cost of medically necessary medication. In 1980, the Nation spent $12 billion on drugs. By 2000, the tab had risen to $121.8 billion.Attempts to address this situation on the Federal level have failed so far, as Congress remains deadlocked.
