On May 14, 2001, 30 police officers and public safety dispatchers — all over the age of 40 and all employed by the Defendants — filed suit pursuant to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). They claimed injuries as a result of an allegedly age-discriminatory performance pay plan implemented by the Defendants in order to grant substantially larger salary increases to police officers and public safety dispatchers under the age of 40.
