On March 26, 2018, Secretary of Commerce Wilber Ross announced that the upcoming 2020 decennial national census of the U.S. population would include a question about citizenship status. Shortly thereafter, New York and a group of 17 other States, 16 local governments, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors filed suit to block this move.
